Bangladesh Bank Heist
One of the most significant bank heists in history was executed digitally against Bangladesh Bank. Cyber criminals managed to compromise the bank’s credentials for its SWIFT payment system. Using these credentials, they initiated a series of fraudulent transactions totaling $951M from the bank’s account at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. While some transactions were blocked, the criminals still managed to get away with $81M.
Snapchat Phishing Scam
Snapchat, the popular social media platform, fell victim to a phishing scam targeting its finance department. An attacker impersonated the CEO and sent an email to a finance employee requesting payroll information. The employee complied, and as a result, the payroll information of several employees was leaked.
European Banks Compromised

Increasing Security for Finance Teams: Why It Matters
Finance teams directly handle an organization’s funds and highly-sensitive information. By compromising the credentials of someone on the finance team, cyber criminals can access accounts and systems to initiate unauthorized transactions, divert payments or commit other types of fraud.
Many financial processes are routine and automated. If an external threat actor or malicious insider can compromise credentials and mimic these regular transactions, their activities might go unnoticed amidst the multitude of legitimate operations.
